Off Day 1
Oh goodness me. I really want to sit down and give a big updated entry. But. It's getting late. I need to talk to the director before he gets busy with actors at 5:30. I'm hungry. And I still need to do my Daily Continuity Log from yesterday (last night). And then I need to figure out a way to give my Logs to the UPM. Or the 1st AD. Whoever wants them. I'm not sure. I also need to talk to the DP about rigging up the TAP monitor for playback. But that one can happen tomorrow.

Have I mentioned that I'm also the VIdeo Assistant? Which means I'm also responsible for the playback (Tap) monitor. It's only a slight expansion of my responsibilities but it's amazing how much a slight expansion can feel like at times. I think it's worth it though. It certainly makes my job easier in many, many ways.

Mm, but yes. Quickly. This week was all right. There were some very rough, frustrating moments but those were balanced by the absolutely hilarious ones. I haven't slept in my bed the last two nights as I've passed out in the extra bedroom at Homebase twice in a row. Last night I slept with a cat. And by last night I mean this morning. Last night was our first night shoot and we wrapped at 4 am. Afterwards I watched some TV with the DP, we both fell asleep on the couch for somewhere between a half hour and an hour, and then I actually went to sleep at 7 am. I woke up today around 11ish I think but it may have been earlier. Definitely not later.

I feel tired but not actually sleepy. Even when I've had the mornings to sleep I've been waking up really early. I'm such a bad sleeper. I'm sure that will change as the shoot goes on though and I'm more exhausted. Maybe.

But I really do need to go do my work now. We're not back on until Thursday so hopefully before then I'll update a little more.

How long are you out with this crew for?
In NYC I interviewed for a gig thinking it was in Silver Springs (DC area) but actually it was in Saratoga Springs (NORTH, yo). ...Ah.
Guess what I'm asking? A random FCP question! Surprise!!! Ahem... if I've made a FCP project into quicktime files and when doing so selected "make self contained," then I am A-OK to delete everything else associated with the project (the capture scratch files, the FCP project), and still be able to burn a DVD based just on the Quicktime files, si? I do believe so. This is obviously something I could find out with trial and error, also, ahem, but figured I'd lazily ask, also.

Continue with the adventure. Please sleep mad amounts and stereotypically DPs seem to hit on everyone yo, haha be careful (retrospectively hilariously on my last project little 22 yr old me had to uh, talk to the mid-30s DP about hitting on the AC & co., because it made them uncomfortable, and then uh the AC quit because of this. fantastic.
xo.

I am here until around Dec 21st. Not sure exactly what I'll be doing at that point but that's about when we wrap.

Haha, FCP questions? I never get those! Yeah, all iDVD needs to burn something is the quicktime file. So once you export it as a quicktime MOV you're fine to delete.

Heh, and hopefully the DP won't be hitting. He's actually a guy I knew from way before this and that would be absurdly awkward! This crew is really ridiculously male. I'm the only female not in the Art Department. The other girls are all Production Design, wardrobe, make-up, that stuff. And yeah, I'm in the Production Department. So Grip and Electric, Camera Team, EVERYONE ELSE, are all guys. Oh yeah, and one of the PAs is a girl. Ah, so much testosterone!

do you think you'll try and roam about more and look for more on location work?

howwwwzzzz about this one:
If I move all files contected to a FCP project from one hard drive to another, can I still work on that project? And by "all files" can I just mean the FCP project and the original footage/capture scratch? Dangerous ground, I feel? If I don't move render files or anything else (what?) does that simply mean I'll have to re-render?

Basically I really want to free up space on my external harddrive, but want to be able to go back to editing this FCP project at a later date. And stupidly I did not save all data contected to the project (capture scratch, fcp) in the same folder, but have one Capture Scratch folder for all orginal footage for all projects, and one folder for FCP projects. I should do this differently in the future, huh. I know I can make independent Quicktimes, but I want to be able to go back to the FCP project.... Mm, thank you for dealing with the uninformed.

I am making up mad lost time for all the questions I did not ask you while in that class! :/

yeah, really not sure what im gonna do after this. see what comes up i guess.

you should be able to move the project okay. what will happen though is that your files will be disconnected. when you open your project a window will pop up telling you that. what you'll have to do is click the option to reconnect files and then you'll be able to select your files in whatever location you saved them in. not a big deal at all.

heh, all of your questions are keeping me in practice!

I media managed for the first time last night! Boy, that is exciting! Space space space. I just got rid of excess footage, but it's probably better to move projects via that than on one's own I'd wager. In fact just by cutting down the project it still told me the first fifth or so of it was offline, but Reconnecting and re-rendering sorted that easily-- which, again, exciting. The bossman also finally followed through on purchasing another external harddrive for my use, quite neat.

Anyway, you're back at the grind, yes, enjoy! (I'm back in brooklyn at my old place on Friday, so will begin pounding down mandy's and craigslist's doors again :)
